MLB Japan Daily Season Recap | 2026 Season
Only three Japanese-born players have ever reached 80 RBIs in a season more than once, and Seiya Suzuki is one of them.
⚾ 鈴木誠也 (Seiya Suzuki)
He did it again this year with 86 RBIs, second among Japanese-born hitters in the big leagues. But the runs are where the year really shows. He crossed the plate 96 times, a top-10 total in the National League and the most he has ever scored in a season. He got there by getting on base, and his 81 walks were a top-10 figure in the league in their own right. So was his on-base percentage, at .368.
The doubles are the number if you asked me how his year went. He hit 31 of them, more than any Japanese-born player in the majors, and that tied him for second on the Cubs. He hit 26 home runs, third on the club. That made this the second season of his career with 25 or more. Only three Japanese-born players have ever reached that mark more than once. Put the doubles and the homers together and he finished third on the Cubs in total bases.
Two of his swings this year had names of their own, the kind you retell. He hit a grand slam against the Colorado Rockies. He ended a game against the San Diego Padres with a walk-off single. And when he got hold of one, it carried: his longest home run of the season travelled 455 feet.
The round numbers piled up too, all in the same season. He hit his 100th career home run this season, and he didn’t stop there — he’s already up to 113. Career RBIs and career runs both passed 300 along the way. The year had a shape to it: April was his best month at .328, and May was his quietest at .190.
The Cubs finished with 89 wins and 73 losses, second in the NL Central, and reached the postseason. It was a season worth every minute. Enjoy the rest of his highlights.
